POPULATION

According to the Educational Project revised, the research population consists of university students who are registered at the Icesi University and who are mostly young men and women, dependent on their parents to pay the costs of their studies (1). The specific group where the research project is carried out is made up of twelve students enrolled in the Level VIII English Language Program at Icesi University most of which attend English class, not only due to their own initiative, but due to the fact that it is a requirement within their careers as one of the objectives of the university in making its graduates have a minimum English proficiency to successfully position its graduate students in the workplace. Among the students, there are seven women and five men between 19 and 24 years of age. Four of them study Business Administration in their seventh and eighth semesters, three study Economics and International Business in their eighth semester, two study Marketing in their seventh semester, two study Psychology, one in his third semester and the other one in his seventh semester and the last one is a Law student in his eighth semester. Because of the high tuition costs of the university, we can conclude that the vast majority of them come from the middle-upper class in the city of Cali. In this group the various ethnic groups of the Colombian population are reflected, mainly the caucasian and mixed ethnicity.

In the classroom, the students are able to meet the goals of the required mechanical grammar exercises in the textbook which need concentration and analysis of grammar rules in context which create tension and fear in them due to the fact that within their professional training, grammar rules are tested to determine or validate this knowledge in their academic tests which is a requirement of the university. But what happens when they culminate their studies, companies interview students and find written and/or oral grammar deficiencies? This displays the need to introduce the communicative approach to teaching the use of language functions so it can be effective and thus achieve greater accuracy in the use of grammar rules.
